March Dinner
13th March 2008
PETER BAXTER
After a career of over 40 years with the BBC as Producer of Test Match Special, Peter Baxter took time to visit us last night to talk to the Club for our final night of the Winter season.
We were enthralled by the tales about the legendary John Arlott, Rex Alston, E.W.Swanton, Brian Johnston, Jonathan Agnew, Fred Trueman and many many others. The stories about each were followed by recordings of their wittier or more controversial commentaries.
Following the talk, the draw took place for the souvenir framed shirt, signed by all the commentators from last year's World Cup, which was presented to the Society by Jimmy Adams, the ex-Captain of the West Indies. The delighted recipient of this wonderful prize was Michael Cartmell.
This was a wonderful evening, bringing to an end a Season, which, following the sad departure of Doug, promised to be problematic, but in fact turned out to be a triumph for the Society. This was due mainly to the efforts of Mike Young and Denise Banting in obtaining speakers.
We now look forward to next season with relish, having been informed by the Chairman that the first two speakers for next year are already in place.
Have a good Summer, everyone and enjoy the cricket.
