Kim Barnett of England, Boland, Derbyshire, Gloucestershire, Staffordshire
19th January 2006
Kim Barnett was a youthful prodigy who toured with English Schools to India in 1977-78, and England Young Cricketers to Australia in 1978-79. He made his debut for Derbyshire in 1979 winning his county cap in 1982 and became the club's youngest-ever captain, aged just 22, a post he held until 1995. In 1988 he earned a Test call-up as well as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year award making his Test debut at Lord's against Sri Lanka, hitting 66 in his first innings, but 0 in the second. He made his one-day international debut shortly afterwards, against the same opposition, struck an attractive 84 and won the Man-of the-Match award. He was never selected again. He was selected a further three times against Australia but was dropped after failures at Lord's and Edgbaston. Barnett was banned from Test cricket after accepting an offer of a place on the Gatting tour to South Africa. After a spell at Gloucestershire Barnett finally retired at the end of 2002. He moved into league cricket and in April 2004 smacked nine successive sixes in the North Staffordshire/South Cheshire League.

Mal Loye seemed destined for international honours, playing England Under-19 and then being picked for an A-team tour in 1993-94 but had to wait 13 years to play at the highest level, when he was selected as a replacement during the 2006-07 CB Series against Australia where he made seven ODI appearances.
